Conjurer's hat

I came to the fair, and everything was as usual, except that in one corner a man in a hat was sitting and looking at me, though it seemed he was not looking at me, but somewhere inside me and through me. He came over and said, give me your hand. So I did. He looked at my hand, scratched my palm with his finger, spat on the ground, took off his hat, put it on my head, stamped his foot, and disappeared. I sat down in the corner and stayed there.

Tall Greshnevik hat, handcrafted using traditional techniques in the southern Ural Mountains. Greshneviks were worn by peasants and inspired by the top hats worn by wealthy people, but made using simpler, more accessible artisan techniques suited to peasant life.
